Lee opens its 2026 season Friday night with a trip to the Metroplex, where the Rebels will face the Plano Wildcats at John Clark Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

After months of offseason workouts, summer preparation and preseason practices, Friday night provides the first real measuring stick for a Lee team preparing for another run through one of West Texas football's demanding schedules.

And the Rebels won't get the luxury of easing into the season at home.

They'll have to make the long trip from Midland to Plano and be ready to play from the opening whistle.

A first test away from home​

Season openers come with enough challenges without adding several hours on the road.

For Lee, handling the trip and settling into the game quickly will be important. The Rebels don't want early penalties, turnovers or missed assignments allowing Plano to establish momentum in front of its home crowd.

The first quarter should provide an early indication of how prepared Lee is to make that transition from preseason football to Friday nights that count.

Offensively, sustaining drives and protecting the football can help Lee establish its rhythm. Defensively, limiting explosive plays and forcing Plano to earn its way down the field will be critical.

Friday also provides Lee's coaching staff with its first opportunity to evaluate this year's team under genuine game conditions.

Practices and scrimmages can answer plenty of questions. A road game under the lights answers a few more.

Building toward district play​

The Rebels aren't playing for a district championship Friday night.

But they're beginning the process that they hope eventually puts them in position to compete for one.

Lee's non-district schedule is an opportunity to develop consistency, establish roles and correct mistakes before District 2-6A play arrives. Every possession against Plano becomes another piece of that preparation.

That doesn't make the result unimportant.

Opening the season with a road victory would give the Rebels something tangible to bring back to Midland and provide an early dose of confidence for a team with much bigger goals ahead.

There will be plenty of football between Friday night and the district schedule.

First, though, the Rebels have business to handle in Plano.

The lights come on Friday night.

And for Lee, the road through 2026 begins on the road.
